Team News Ivory Coast are an ageing team; Didier Drogba is 36, Didier Zakora 33 and Yaya Touré 31.
The latter remains a doubt with the hamstring injury he suffered on the last day of the season with Manchester City, though a decision will not be made until late on Saturday.
Match Notes
Muscle faces pace as the Elephants take on the Blue Samurai in Recife.
Ivory Coast have been to two previous tournaments but have never progressed from the group stage
Japan have been to every World Cup since 1998 but they have kept only one clean sheet in their last nine matches.
Will Didier Drogba bow out of his last World Cup with a goal or two? Hard to bet against that.
Stat of the game: Gervinho, the Ivory Coast striker, was with Arsenal when he scored twice in a 6-1 Premier League win over Southampton, for whom Japan’s Maya Yoshida was making his debut, in September 2012
