The German machine rolls on. And after Tuesday's brutal humiliation of hosts Brazil, Argentina could be forgiven for wondering how to stop them.
The German machine rolls on. And after Tuesday's brutal humiliation of hosts Brazil, Argentina could be forgiven for wondering how to stop them.
Germany have not won win this trophy for 24 years and having lost the last two finals appear seriously determined to secure a fourth success.
Argentina's wait has been longer; they last won the World cup on home soil, in 1986, when they beat West Germany 3-2 with Jorge Burruchaga's 84th minute winner dividing the teams.
This is also a repeat of the final in 1990 when West Germany won 1-0 in Rome thanks to an Andy Brehme penalty with four minutes remaining.
So a late goal could determine the winner, and despite being on their own continent, Argentina may find Germany stronger in most departments.
Stat of the game: Germany's Miroslav Klose has 16 World Cup goals, a record. But his goals have come in 23 games with an average of 0.70. Compatriot Gerd Müller scored 14 World Cup goals in just 13 games, an average of 1.08.
Germany (Possible, 4-3-3): Neuer; Lahm, Hummels, Boateng, Höwedes; Khedira, Schweinsteiger, Kroos; Özil, Müller, Götze.
Argentina (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Romero; Zabaleta, F Fernández, Garay, Rojo; E Perez, Mascherano; Palacio, Messi, Lavezzi; Higuaín.
